Bicycle tour the Saguaro National Monument

As the sun creeps north and you yearn to jump-start your cycling season, sign up for Enchanted Lands Sunchaser Bicycle Tour. This spring bicycle tour begins in Tucson and travels through southeast Arizona. We will leisurely travel to Benson, Tombstone, Bisbee, Sonoita, and Green Valley on this route before returning to Tucson 6 days and 310 miles later.

Day 1: East Tucson to Benson (60 miles)

Our tour begins skirting along the eastern edge of Tucson where we cycle a delightful loop that winds amongst the desert saguaro sentries, giving one an appreciation of the unique arid environment Saguaro National Park. We will we travel southeast to the crossroads town of Benson on the banks of the San Pedro River. Benson was the railroad hub of Southern Arizona until 1910. Kartchner Caverns are located nearby.

Day 2: Benson to Bisbee (52 miles)

A pleasant ride on lightly traveled roads takes us through grasslands bordered by the Whetstone Mountains to the west. We will arrive in Tombstone with time to sample some of the “Old West”. Venture beyond Main Street and explore the history of Tombstone. Mule Pass will give the lungs and legs a workout before we rapidly descend to the copper mining town of Bisbee. Our two-night stay will be at one of Bisbee’s historic inns.

Southwest Mine

Day 3: Bisbee Day

Wander through the narrow, winding streets of Bisbee and up some of its steep hills. Bisbee has a plethora of small interesting shops to browse and activities to do. You can don on miner’s gear and headlamps for a tour deep into the heart of the Copper Queen mine.

Day 4: Bisbee to Sonoita (70 miles)

Today we will experience cycling on some of the back roads west of Bisbee. The Huachuca Mountains form an impressive backdrop for our journey to Sierra Vista. Nearby Fort Huachuca, our lunch stop, is both a historic fort and modern military base. We travel on lesser known roads through the rolling grasslands and vineyards of this region to reach our destination of Sonoita.

Day 5: Sonoita to Green Valley (74 miles)

We pass through Patagonia, nestled between the majestic Santa Rita Mountains and the beautiful red Patagonia Mountains. Our road follows a perennial stream with cottonwoods and oaks canopying the highway. Before reaching the busy border town of Nogales, Arizona we turn northwest. The “roller coaster road” is a fun challenge before reaching Rio Rico. Afterwards the terrain flattens as the route takes us by the mission at Tumacacori and Tubac “where art meets history”.

Day 6: Green Valley to Tucson (41 miles)

Green Valley houses a fascinating museum of an element of our country’s recent history-The Titan Missile Museum. The rest of our route travels through some small settlements along lightly traveled roads. We will arrive at our final destination in the afternoon.
